A critical essay analyzing Kehinde Wiley’s Napoleon Leading the Army Over the Alps through the lens of visual culture, race, and bias. The piece explores how classical power is portrayed in art history, and how Wiley challenges that narrative by inserting modern Black figures into heroic poses. Drawing on Jeffrey J. Cohen’s “Monster Culture” theory, the essay argues that Wiley’s work surfaces cultural anxieties and prompts viewers to confront subconscious bias.
